I realized something today during one of my rare free moments where my mind wanders: I never have insurance agents trying to sell me policies.
Why is that?
I go to church with an insurance agent, and he's never asked me about my home, auto or life insurance. Why not?
Two college friends are insurance agents, and they haven't ever asked me about buying insurance from them. Why is that?
Get this: My office is right next door to a small insurance agency...I watch their four insurance agents walk right past my office several times a day...and in the year that I've been there, not one has come next door and checked to see if I needed an insurance quote (business insurance...health insurance...supplemental insurance...they've never asked).
It's been the exact opposite, in fact:
- My health insurance plan for my small company? I hunted down an insurance agent I had heard about, made an appointment, and came to his office.
- Auto insurance? I saw an Esurance ad on TV and gave them a whirl...so far, so good.
- Homeowners insurance? I've been with the same company for years. The only time I've had a review done in the last decade is when I requested it.
- Supplemental health insurance? I just called a local Aflac rep, and three days later I got a return call wanting to know when she could set up an appointment for me to come to her.
Are all insurance reps just lazy? I don't think so. It's just that I haven't met one
that's really on the ball yet. Are they stupid? Maybe...they're losing a lot of busienss if I'm not the only one who is being ignored.
My point in this little rant? How many people are you walking by every day, or not calling on every day, or putting off every day, that desperately need what you have?
You'll never know until you get off your rear end and start selling. By the way, if you're an insurance agent that's doing it right, let me know in the comment box below...we'll give you free PR if you let us know what you're doing and the secret to your insurance-selling-success.

Hey Dan,
You've made some interesting observations here. At InsureMe (an online insurance shopping service), we've sometimes had complaints from our leads about NOT being contacted with quotes when requested, which seems odd to me since the agent has paid for the sales lead. We've tried to find a reason for this in the past...perhaps business is just THAT good?
I don't know the answer, but will pose the question over on the InsureMe Agent Blog. Maybe I can start a dialog with our agent readers. Come on over and check it out!
