We were on vacation at the beach.
Near where we were staying, they were having a farmer's market. My wife and daughter walked over, and they came back with two little white foam cups, each with one little pumpkin seedling growing (because what is a trip to the beach if you can't bring home a pumpkin, right?)
But these weren't any ordinary white foam cups with pumpkin seedlings growing in them. No, no, no.
As my 11-year old daughter explained, this was a part of a pumpkin growing contest. It was nationwide. There was an instruction sheet, explaining how to grow a pumpkin and how to submit your picture of your pumpkin for the contest.
I thought it was a great sales angle: If someone would have just been selling pumpkin seedlings, it would have had so-so results. But attach a story to it all, and suddenly theres a little magic in those plain white foam cups.
There's a lesson there for anyone selling anything. Pay attention to it. It's helping an intrepid young pumpkin seedling salesman rake in the cash at a farmer's market near you!

Very smart marketing! Great food (ahem) for thought.
