My wife loves Jennifer Murphy's minature teddy bears.
She heard about her from a magazine article that she read. It wasn't a big magazine...it was one of those specialty girly girl magazines about decorating, crafts, potpouri and all that crap stuff.
After reading the article, she went to her website. She signed up for news about her latest products. Tonight, my wife dragged me over to the computer to show me all of the new stuff that Jennifer Murphy designed, and is now selling.
Most of Jennifer's teddy bears and other little hand-made creations sell for hundreds of dollars. They sell out in a few minutes on her website.
Ever heard of Jennifer Murphy? Neither had I. And yet, she's doing quite well for herself, making her little creatures, selling them for hundreds of dollars a piece, establishing a loyal following, and having no problems putting together a great business doing what she loves. And, what's she's good at.
It dawned on me tonight that I've never seen an ad for Jennifer Murphy's bears. She doesn't take out ads in magazines; magazines come to her and write about her work. She became the expert first, created a remarkable product born from a natural creative talent, and the sales naturally followed.
Could it be that a diminutive teddy bear creator just reminded sales professionals everywhere about the secret to selling that's easy, profitable and enjoyable?
