Would You Buy Chocolate For $2000 Per Pound?

If you're buying Noka Chocolate, you're doing just that.

Is it worth it?  Depends on how you define "worth".

Seth Godin's book, "All Marketers Are Liars", does a great job of relating how we love to buy things that we can believe in...things whose story we love, and have a connection with.  That line of thinking appears to be the case with the customers of Noka Chocolate.

But as Seth and other bloggers note, the "story" behind price only lasts so long.  Eventually, we do pay attention to the man behind the curtain.  Eventually, the jig is up.  Not so yet for Noka, but people can only buy mediocre chocolate in a fancy box at $2000 a pound for so long.

Still, what a great example of how important your "package" and your "story" are in the process of making the sale.  I mean, seriously: If these people can sell chocolate for that much, how hard can it be to sell whatever it is you're selling?

» How About an Outrageous Price to Reel In Sales Leads? from TopLeadGenerators
Over at LandingTheDeal, I told you about chocolate that was selling at $2000 per pound. Not to be outdone, there's news today of a new hamburger that will set you back a cool $110.  Here's part of the story:A luxury hotel... [Read More]

Just think about what else those people could do with that money.

Then again, anyone who spends money like that clearly doesn't need the money they have. In that case, just imagine what a charity could do with that kind of excess money.

From a different angle, you said that peopel would only buy it "for so long." That will still work out for the company selling it even if their sales last only a short time because with prices like that, their profits are astronomical.

The hand wringing seems strange, especially from marketers. I mean, Tiffany's sterline silver isn't particularly special either...it's the little blue box that delivers the message and creates the experience. I saw, felt and lifted the stainless steel packaging used by NOKA and it is clear that this is a tactile experience that in which the chocolate is a participant but not the driver.

Also, I'm not sure where the story got twisted into suggesting that the couverture used by NOKA is anything sub-par. According to the series on Dallas Food, the source of the chocolate is highly respected. A small point, perhaps, but there is an argument to be made that the product truly is top notch.

Dan, a reader of the blog here at LandingTheDeal, comments on my recent post asking whether anyone would buy chocolate that costs $2000 a pound.  And, he makes some good points...The hand wringing seems strange, especially from marketers. I mean,T... [Read More]

I note that Dan hasn't brought you up to date yet; presumably he missed you. In any case, Dan is a PR person; while he was not apparently employed by Noka when he made that post, he now is. You can see his side of the story here: http://www.keeneypr.com/en/art/?222

As I write this comment I am engaged as a PR person representing NOKA. The original comments were written prior to that and reflected my personal opinion. However, facts are facts and that makes it worthy of an update. So as Kirk Brewer suggested in a post on my site (www.dpkpr.com), I am posting this update. Thanks to Kirk and others for their constructive feedback. As others have noted, NOKA has issued a statement regarding the issues raised by Dallas Food and we are in the process of getting that out. Since my personal opinions are no longer relevant, I won't be reposting.
