I like Ron over at Buzzoodle, so I'll add a big reason to his list that tries to answer the question, "Why Does WOM Get Ignored?"
By the way, "WOM" is "word-of-mouth" marketing, something that
Buzzoodle specializes in. Secondly, make sure to read Ron's list...its a good one.
But as I just mentioned, something big is missing. Another HUGE reason as to why WOM gets ignored.
Are you ready? Here it is...
Ad agencies haven't figured out a way to charge for it. Yet.
This is why, despite the fact that TV, radio and newspaper are becoming less reliable in terms of the sales that they can generate, they continue to rack in billions of dollars in ad revenue. Why? Because the advertising establishment plays it safe, sticks with what works (or at least what is billable!) and their clients continue to budget their expenses into their bottom line projections.
Ad agencies can't charge for word-of-mouth marketing - not as easily as they can for TV and the like, anyway - and so it remains as the cute little quirky cousin to the TV-Radio-Print ad superstar.
Is it right? No. WOM advertising is highly effective, and much less expensive. But if you're wondering why WOM isn't in the mainstream yet in terms of what brings in sales dollars, there you have it.

Exceptional point.
I still am experimenting with ways to help people and bill for it with Buzzoodle in the word of mouth area. It is also hard because people do not take a long term approach to it.
