What can you do to plug a so-so movie with good viral buzz marketing?
Just have the star, Samuel L. Jackson, call your friends and tell them to see it.
That's the strategy for the new movie, "Snakes On a Plane". It's a movie about...yes, that's right...snakes on a plane. I wouldn't hold my breath for a four star rating from the critics if I were you.
But, they've got a clever marketing tool for this otherwise low-budget cinematic effort: You can go to the movie's website and click on a link to have the movie's star, Samuel L. Jackson, call one of your friends and personally invite them to see the flick. A company called VariTalk provides this cool marketing technology.
Pretty cool, and a great buzz marketing idea!
I don't fall for this kind of gimmicky stuff very often, but I have to tell you I just got done wasting about 30 minutes of my day sending personalized phone messages to a few friends from Samuel L. Jackson via the movie's Internet site.
It's a great example of cheap, cool, viral buzz marketing. And because it's original, here I am talking about it to a few hundred of our readers. Worth the investment for the guys who made the movie? No doubt. Congrats to them for selling their new film creatively and effectively.
Now, how can you take the thing you're selling and get people to get excited about it by being creative?

New Line Pictures has really come up with something new that will certainly get more people into theatres than classic trailers or advertising.
