Tenth in a series
Now Seth Godin changes points of views for a moment, giving some advice to sales professionals from a marketers point of view:
I know that selling is hard and unpredictable. But if you're going to be in sales, you've got to be prepared to measure and predict and plan. You need to give me sales reports and call lists and summaries. It does neither of us any good to keep your day a secret. If you don't plan and organize, I can't do my job of marketing.
Allow me to translate: Stop your whining, sales professional. Organization and reporting are a part of your day, and necessary for your co-workers to do their best and try to give you more tools to do your job with.
On a personal note, I always hated reporting back to my manager when I was in sales. It wasn't until I became a manager that I realized how important it all was. Looking back, I should have had a better attitude about it...and, I should have measured my activities and success much more than I did as a sales professional.
