Promises made by sales professionals are sacred in the eyes of their customers. Customers remember promises made to them, and hold the sales rep personally responsible (for them, the company is their sales rep).
Here's Seth Godin's message to the marketing department on the subject:
Selling is personal. When I make a promise, I have to keep it. If you force me to break that promise (by changing processes, features or a rollout schedule) I will never forgive you.
And, their customers (who are your company's customers, and your customers, and the source of revenue that keeps you in that cubicle you've grown to love) may never forgive you.
