Fifth in a series:
Seth Godin is talking with LandingTheDeal about the latest sales and marketing trends, and how those trends affect today's sales professional. (By the way, doesn't Seth look like the bald older brother of actor David Duchovny?
Seth himself is trying to start a trend - not surprising, if you've tracked his career. Seth has helped launch Squidoo...kind of a more focused version of an Internet search engine. What is it? Why should sales professionals have their own "lens"? Seth offers a summary answer:
"The hardest thing about the dating process called selling is getting the first date. And a Squidoo lens (or a blog, or a good website) helps you get that date. It gives you a sharp needle in the haystack, one that people might find and follow up on.
"If I were in sales, I would have a lens about the prospect and the prospect's problems, and make sure it featured my phone number and other contact information."
So, Seth, how does Squidoo sell?
"We don't sell things, Dan. Our lensmasters do. And they do it in an environment that is relevant and anticipated (not quite personal, but close). For instance, the idea is that the best time to be sold a book on knitting is when you're looking at a knitting lens."
Who can author a lens? Anyone. Make it about your product, and provide answers and information that will allow you to be viewed as the expert in your field.
Imagine...being considered an "expert" vs. a "sales rep"!
