Final in the series:
I hope you enjoyed our extended conversation with Jim Holvay, who
traded in his rock-n-roll gold records with The Buckinghams for a sales career that's spanned two decades in Southern California.
What I learned from talking with Jim:
- It's never too late to change careers, and find success.
- Don't wear velvet to the office.
- It's legal to claim 34 dependents on your W-2 form.
- Being yourself and having fun with your customer is one of the keys to selling successfully, and enjoying what you do.
- Ditch the sales scripts.
- Faking your resume works, as long as they don't call your fake former companies that you claim to have worked for.
- You'll get through any tough times that you're going through. Just keep focused and work hard. That's what Jim did.
I am priviledged to call Jim Holvay a friend, as well as a mentor. He is ten times funnier in person than I have probably been able to portray here, but he's also a talented manager and trainer.
If you'd like to e-mail Jim and say hello, or ask him his advice on sales (or breaking into rock-n-roll!) send him an e-mail at jholvay@officedepot.com. Tell him you read about him on LandingTheDeal.
You never know...you might get him started and find yourself listening to some of the most amazing, funny and interesting life stories that you've ever heard!
Thanks, Jim, for doing the interview and sharing your story.
