It strikes me how ineffective President Bush and his administration have been in selling their plan and defending their policies as of late. Politics, just like every other aspect of life, requires effective sales skills.
Right now, for whatever reason, they aren't on their game.
It tends to happen to Presidents in their second terms, as well as other politicians from time to time. And that always fascinates me, from a sales standpoint: Why would something so crucial like selling your message be swept aside and not made a primary focus of your organization? Politics is selling personified, and it you don't take it seriously...well, you know the rest.
Set aside your political leanings for a moment and you'll see that poor sales strategies have plagued almost every administration in recent memory, regardless of party:
- President Bush and his Iraq strategy, answering critics effectively, Hurricane Katrina, and on and on.
- President Clinton and his foreign policy decisions, alleged indescretions, and on and on.
- The other President Bush and his flip-flop on his taxes, and on and on.
- President Reagan and his many second term troubles.
The sales message in politics needs to be consistent and constant. Wouldn't you think that they would know that by now?
