Third in a series:
Jeffrey Gitomer is doing exactly what he dreamed of doing: Authoring books, doing seminars, and generally making a name for himself as the foremost sales expert of our time.
But what if he had to do something else? Our question to Jeffrey...
If you weren't a speaker and writer, what sales industry would Jeffrey Gitomer MOST like to work in?
"Most people take jobs and hate them. If I didn’t do what I
currently do, then I would take a job in a bookstore or a sports memorabilia store, or I would become a cook. I would take a job where I could learn and do something fun.
I should add to that, though, that I wouldn’t want to work in the store -- I would want to own the store. I am an entrepreneur, and typically, entrepreneurs make lousy employees."
So true. In fact, I think this is one of the reasons many sales people struggle at salaried sales positions. Here's what I mean: Sales professionals love the sale, love the commissions, love the flexible schedule in many cases. But they hate answering to a manager. That's why many sales professionals end up starting their own business, and why many sales professionals who are too scared to do that (right now, anyway) end-up floating from job to job. The number one reason they left their previous job? "I hated my manager!"
My recommended solution: Be your own boss!
