It was part of Janel's presentation that revolved around the unsafe features of the standard Teflon coated pans that most of us have cooked with for years.
In an effort to punctuate her point, she told us that "Teflon was very dangerous to small animals, because when overheated it can release a gas that is toxic to small animals and birds...it can cause their organs to swell up...their lungs will burst...and they'll die."
Wow! I hadn't heard that before. And that was a little bit of a problem...it sounded so unusual it was distracting from the point they were trying to make, and prompted a lot of side discussion that kind of got them off-track. Get my brother-in-law Scott (pictured above on the right) and I together and we can derail any kind of logical line of thinking with a non-stop stream of one-liners and tangents. After a few minutes of animals-killed-by-Teflon jokes, Janel recovered and moved on.
I looked up her facts, and she is right...Teflon can be deadly for small animals. In fact, it can be very dangerous for humans as well. I think a copy of the story I just linked to would drive home the point better than the animal story...but that's just me.
