You probably know the name Estee Lauder. If you use make-up, or are married to someone who does, it's a household name. One of the biggest brand names in cosmetics in the world.
But it wasn't always that way. Here's a quick profile from the guys at justsell.com:
In the 1930s, Estée Lauder started her enterprise by selling skin
creams concocted by her uncle, a chemist, in beauty shops, beach clubs and resorts. To grow the business further, she persisted with the bosses of New York City department stores until she eventually sold Saks Fifth Avenue on carrying her products in 1948. As more stores picked up her line, Lauder traveled to each new counter and personally selected and trained the saleswomen.
In 1998, Lauder was the only woman on Time magazine's list of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the century. This year, Estée Lauder Inc. placed No. 340 on the 2006 Fortune 500 list of the nation's largest companies, with revenue at $6.3 billion.
Here's a quote from Ms. Lauder on how she did it:
"I have never worked a day in my life without selling. If I believe in something,
I sell it, and I sell it hard."
