One of our favorite stops on the central California coast is The Cambria Nursery.
Great gardens, lots of interesting plants and landscaping ideas, and helpful people to answer your questions.
As we were getting ready to check out, an ultra-friendly, smiling, engaging cashier greeted us and wanted to know if we found everything. We had a question, and she cheerfully came out from behind her counter and showed us what we were looking for. Then, as she was ringing-up our purchase, she made a few suggestions of some things we might want to get along with what we were already planning on buying. We went for one of her suggestions.
When we were done, we had spent an extra $15 because of her recommendations and attentiveness.
Now, $15 isn't going to cause the owners to do backflips and open up another store. But what if that's happening on every sale? What if this on-the-ball cashier is getting everyone to spend an extra $10 or so on every purchase?
The place gets at least 50 customers a day...they're open 7 days a week...so, an extra $500 multiplied by 364 days a year equals a whopping $182,000 in additional last-minute sales!
It's amazing how your customers will respond when you're super friendly, go out of your way to help them, and suggest things that they should be buying along with their planned purchase. And yet, most of us are content with just getting the sale done with and moving on to the next thing.
Smiles and attitude sell. A lot.
