I comment so frequently on Seth Godin's posts, I decided to put a new category on my blog entitled the "Seth Godin Post-Game Show". Again, Seth brings up a great sales and marketing question:
Who in their right mind would pay $27 for bottle of "mist" for your skin in their hotel room? The same people that pay $5 for a bottled water in their hotel room, $8 for a third run movie in their hotel room, and $20 for someone park their car.
Why are such things offered at a hotel? Because they can sell those things. Frequently, at a great profit margin. It benefits the hotel greatly, and that's why they sell it. Because there are buyers for it.
My point, and I do have one: Are you maximizing the profit of every product or service you offer? Would the market pay more for it? If so, why aren't you charging it? I mean, if your job is to sell and bring in as much revenue for yourself and for your company, why aren't you?
Of course, this all has to be tempered with a firm knowledge of your market. I don't imagine Seth Godin stays at a Comfort Suites when he travels...the hotels he would stay at would offer such things as $27 spray mist and $5 bottled waters. And good for Seth...he is a brilliant author, and deserves the best. But that also means that the hotel he stays at has the right to offer things at an insanely high profit margin. They know their customers, and the hotel is in the business to make money.
Again, I ask: Are you getting everything from your product or service that you offer? Take a good, hard, long look.
