Seth Godin's post today about the myth of being "first to the market with something" as the key to winning that market has some good sales lessons you can take away from it. Read his post once or twice to grasp the concept that he's trying to get across, especially the end of the article about "splintering."
Here's the bottom line in all of it for sales professionals: As your market splinters and becomes segmented, so must you. One sales approach and presentation for every type of customer won't cut it. You need to be looking for how your market segments itself, and then come up with an individualized approach (as well as new products and services) to address that new "splintered" segments.
