I love fish tacos. If you've never tried one, you're missing out. If you've tried them and don't like them, then we're not going to get along too well.
My favorite restaurant near my home is Coconut Joe's in Bakersfield, California. Stop there if you get a chance.
I was having lunch there the other day...
...and I ordered my other favorite dish called the Hono-Woo-Woo Bowl. Trust me, its good too. As the cashier was processing my credit card, I noticed that their menu board said they now were offering their fish tacos for lunch. I seldom go there for dinner, and they used to only be served after 5pm. I had never tried a fish taco there before.
"Oh shoot," I said to the cashier, "I didn't know you were serving fish tacos at lunch now." I was bummed. My payment had already gone through.
The cashier then said, "I'll tell you what. How about we give you a sample of the fish taco and you can come in and order them next time."
HOME RUN! I was really impressed that this college-aged cashier was on the ball and offered me a free sample to make me happy.
Sales is about making people happy and exceeding their expectations. It's also about reading your customers correctly. This cashier did all three things. All of us can learn some sales lessons from her.
Oh, and the fish taco was AWESOME!

Hey Dan,
Thanks for sharing this story! I love reading good stories and I also love FREE food :)
I was just in Bakersfield this past December on my way to Lemoore - know where that is?
